Five Hundred Year Sonic Blizzard

“An hour of hidden gems, secret weapons, strange tunings, impossible collages, and unexpected samplings that we’ve loved over the years. As people whose musical interests span geography, genre, and era, we are always searching for that which we have not heard before, and treasure sharing those moments of discovery. It’s some of the songs we’ve most wanted to blast in our new space, on the dream speakers that Automatic built for us. Songs to make the air move.  ”

Rocksteady and Roots Selection by Papa-P from Kitano Creation Sound

“I spent my 20’s in NYC. Already loved reggae music before I moved to NY. Back in the day there were so many vinyl only sound system parties happening. At that time I didn’t know reggae has many style such as ska, rocksteady, roots, rub-a-dub, lovers rock etc… One day I went to the party only playing deep roots with gigantic sound system. My life actually changed since then. I started to visit reggae shop called Deadly Dragon Sound NYC. They have insane collections of vintage reggae records. I spent all my tuition (I literally quit school for that) and all my money I made. I didn’t know vintage reggae records were so difficult to find and expensive. Mainly I buy 70’ Jamaican music. As I’m Japanese I love searching something rare, hard to find, with deep sounds. So all together I was getting into collecting vintage deep roots records, which formed Kitano Creation Sound. It is 2 selectors. Me and Sony. Sony moved back to Japan and doing tacos restaurant called Kitade Shokudo.”

Noise Rock & Experimental Riffage with Luc

“Music does not always need to take you to the same place. For many listeners, it’s an escape or a distraction or a way to coax out an emotion. For the artists playing it’s the same. Whether its sparse noise rock, infectious riffage or experimental soundscapes, it’s always interesting to me when the boundaries of music start to fade and force me to think “where did this come from?”. It’s not always as deep as you think which only makes it more interesting. This show starts noisy and non musical and sine waves up towards head banging listenability. Enjoy!”

Le Big Boss Returns

After a really fun run of guest shows hosted by our builders, our clients, and our muses, co-founder Denis steps up to the wheels of steel to string together what are arguably the best songs in the world. Starting with the moving poetry of Camille Yarbrough, Denis guides you through the dreamy sounds of Yusef Lateef, Azimuth, Johnny Hammond, Funk inc., Talking Heads, and Triste Janero to name a few. Spring has sprung. Shop days keep getting sweatier. May this mix quench your thirst like a cold glass of delicious depanneur lemonade.

Speaker Builder: Al

“I’ve spent a lot of time working in kitchens with people sharing music and taking turns with the aux cord all day long. I got into the AA builds the same way I fell into the kitchen: being around meticulous and talented people with great taste. People who are just as much fun to work with as they are to party with after. I’d be hard pressed to name a distinct theme for the tracks I’ve laid out here. It’s an assortment from my record collection. Things I’ve come across digging through crates out of town or the favourite local shops with friends. Overall its funky and soulful, hopefully it leaves you with some sweet melodies and nasty grooves that get stuck in your head for the day.”

Inspirational Source: Sheila Nadimi

“It has taken me nearly my entire career as an artist to realize that what I am trying to do is open up new space through whatever material I am working with. I have put together a selection of artists that I connect with for how they establish sonic landscapes. I grew up with records, CD’s, and car radio and there are times I look to music to accompany me back to those familiar sounds and places. But music that inspires me needs to bring me somewhere unexpected and unsettle my sense of the world. The question that always leaves me not knowing what to say is “What music do you listen to?” I want to remain an open listener, to move around musical eras and genres, and be prepared to question my own tastes. I hope you enjoy where this selection of tracks takes you.”
